How do this leg stretch/exercise work?

I’m curious. I don’t have a picture, but I’ll describe it as much as I can.

Basically I balance on one leg for about 30-40 seconds.
I saw it on Seventeen magazine and it’s supposed to help tone the legs.
I just want to know HOW that works, and does it really help??

Any stretching you can do is good in that when you stretch you are using muscles and that helps to tone our bodies. Also by standing on one leg you are using more than just one muscle group in try to keep yourself balanced. If you are holding your one leg up in this stretch you are stretching the muscle in front part of your thigh and this is important when running because it is very painful if you do not and you strain this muscle.
