what stretches can a 21 year old guy do to gain the flexibility to do the splits?

I am a 21 year old mail, getting ready to start ballet lessons in about a month, and I want to be able to do the splits. I am 6’8" tall and weigh 180 pounds, so pretty skinny, so kinda flexible already. Please be detailed or post links and pics, but I want to know what I can do to get to a point where I can do the splits the quickest.

Looks like you will need the barre for this……If you don’t have a barre, a top of a high chair or table will do.

Raise one of your legs to straight position so that it is horizontal to the floor. The unraised leg should be straight.

Stretch the horizontal leg so that your toe points and hold it…..for about 20 seconds or so.

There is another type of stretch that can be done without the barre….

Sit on your gluteals, bring both legs spread-out as straight as you can in a 1/4 or 1/3 side split. Now, keeping that split (holding it), lean your upper body slowly backward, one vertebrae at the time, until your face nearly touches the floor, and you stay in that leaned position for about 15-20 seconds. Then slowly go back to straight position one vertebrae at a time…but don’t move your legs and feet…keep them at that split position.

Repeat the stretch leaning forward and backward 5 more times….and on each time, bring your hands straight on the ground and let them walk on the ground away from your body as much as you can for a better stretch.

This stretch would be good for the hamstrings….but you won’t see them more flexible overnight….you need to wait 3 weeks and you need to do the stretches every day or nearly every day or you will lose this increased flexibility.
